About the Campaign
A persistent misperception that the work of school food professionals is unskilled has held back the school food workforce and the overall impact of school food itself. The Powered by School Food Professionals campaign, managed by the Chef Ann Foundation and supported by the State of California, was designed to shift public perceptions of school food professionals in California, particularly among parents.
This first-of-its-kind campaign successfully highlighted the skill and creativity of school food professionals across California, while piloting a research-backed messaging model that others can adapt to make a wider case for change.

Understanding the Challenge
The campaign research started with an important question: What do California parents think about School Food Professionals, and why?
To find out, we partnered with research experts to gather insights from K-12 parents statewide through online surveys and focus groups. The campaign’s research revealed that many people are simply unaware of what school food professionals do. This lack of knowledge reinforces stereotypes and inaccurate perceptions of the role.
While Californians see school food professionals as hardworking people who make a positive difference, they simultaneously associate school food work with low skill, status, and value. The research also showed that messages highlighting school food professionals’ expertise and impact on students’ wellbeing were likely to shift perceptions in a positive direction.
Our Creative Approach
With these insights in hand, we launched a wide-reaching campaign designed to meet K-12 parents where they already spend their time and shift how they see the school food professionals behind their children’s school meals.
First, we produced first-person video stories filmed in school kitchens across California, where school food professionals shared their own experiences and expertise. These videos appeared across streaming services, broadcast TV, YouTube, social media, and native ads.

Second, we partnered with content creators including school food professionals, parents, teachers, and students who filmed and shared their own authentic stories on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. These creators connected with their existing audiences by highlighting how school food professionals are dedicated change-makers who cook and serve food that helps kids thrive in school.
Finally, we launched the Powered by School Food Professionals Awards, a recipe competition that invited school food professionals to submit their students’ favorite dishes across six categories, highlighting culinary skill. The awards culminated in an exclusive media event featuring celebrity chef Suzanne Tracht, who recreated winning recipes, generating press coverage while celebrating school food professionals’ innovation and expertise.

The Result
The Powered by School Food Professionals campaign achieved its primary objective: increasing parents’ positive perceptions of school food professionals. The campaign reached more than 24 million Californians through digital advertising alone — not including the millions who encountered the campaign through billboard and radio ads. In fact, the first ad flight of the campaign created 98.3 million total impressions, surpassing the entire campaign goal of 98 million impressions in less than two months.
After the campaign launched, there was a 10 percentage-point increase in K-12 parents who believed school food professionals are professional, skilled, influential in menu planning, and possess culinary training and nutritional expertise, rising from 49% to 59%. Statewide, this represents a potential boost in perceptions among 1.1 million California K-12 parents.
Beyond the quantitative measures, the campaign generated positive, impactful reactions from both the general public and school food professionals themselves, creating momentum that will play a long-term role in recruiting and retaining school food professionals while opening doors to higher wages, more training, and increased prominence for school food professionals within their districts and communities.
